Frequently asked questions
Refined gives you the power to turn Confluence and Jira Service Management into custom, user-friendly sites. For instance, you can build an intranet for employees, a documentation site for customers, and a portal for your partner network, all of which pull content from the same underlying Confluence and JSM instances.
Refined sites have a more intuitive look and feel than native Confluence and JSM. They are also fully customizable. Tailor the user experience with layouts and modules, permissions, fonts, themes, custom domains, and more.
Sites come together in the Site Builder. Simply add content from linked Confluence and/or Jira Service Management instances (Confluence spaces, JSM service desks) as well as outside links and Refined pages. Drag and drop these items into a hierarchy and organize them with menu folders. The structure you establish inside the Site Builder automatically maps to your site’s top navigation menu. Then add a theme, build your layouts, set permissions, and voilà.
Not at all! All Refined apps have built-in theme templates to help you get started. Simply tweak one of these to your liking, or create a theme from scratch using our Theme Editor.
Data Center and Cloud are hosting options. Which one you choose depends on your underlying Atlassian hosting, but note that there are differences between the two.
Refined Sites for Confluence and Refined Sites for Jira Service Management Cloud are SaaS solutions that pull content from Confluence/JSM into stand-alone sites. These sites exist outside the Atlassian environment, so users access them via a URL of your choosing.
Refined for Confluence and Refined for Jira Service Management are laid directly over your Confluence/JSM instance in Atlassian. Users access these the same way they’d normally access Confluence and JSM.
Both Cloud and Data Center versions of Refined Toolkit for Confluence add extra functionality inside native Confluence.
Refined can migrate along with your Atlassian hosting. Of course, we are here to help you smoothly transition your sites to Data Center or to Cloud. And you can even choose where to store your data.
Which site-building app you need depends on the Atlassian tools you use, and whether those tools are hosted on Cloud or Data Center.
If you have:
Confluence Cloud you can build sites with the app Refined for Confluence Cloud
Confluence Data Center you can build sites with the app Refined for Confluence Data Center
Jira Service Management Cloud you can build sites with the app Refined for Jira Service Management Cloud
Jira Service Management Data Center you can build sites with the app Refined for Jira Service Management Data Center
Refined also builds Refined Toolkit, lighter apps available on Cloud and Data Center that elevate the Confluence user experience with a space theming feature, a space overview editor, and macros.
On Cloud you can build sites that combine functionality from both Confluence and Jira Service Management Cloud, which opens the door to new users and use cases. For example, it’s possible to build an intranet that contains news and departmental information (Confluence spaces and blogs), as well as HR and IT help desks (Jira Service Management projects).
To do this, you need both the Refined Sites for Confluence app and the Refined Sites for Jira Service Management app.
Refined doesn’t include versioning, but it’s easy to use Confluence permissions to control what end users see. Alternatively, you can use a third-party tool such as Comala Publishing. Learn more about versioning for Refined on our help site.

When using Refined Sites for Confluence or Refined Sites for Jira Service Management cloud, you can choose to host your data in either the US or in the EU. Note that data residency options are not yet available for Refined Toolkit for Confluence Cloud.

By default, all of your organization’s Confluence/JSM Administrators have administrator rights in Refined. You can also assign Refined Administrator roles to any other Confluence/JSM user in your organization, regardless of their Atlassian permissions. Additionally, you can assign Site Administrator roles, which are valid for one site only. This way, all the right people in your organization can contribute to your Refined sites.
You can set View Permissions for each of your sites, meaning you have control over who can access them. There are three access levels to choose from, with the side note that Atlassian permissions still apply to all Atlassian content on your site.
Access level:
Anonymous users
All users, no login required.
Public
JSM customers
Logged-in JSM customers.
Public & Support
Atlassian users
Users in your organisation who logged in with their Atlassian account.
Public, Support & Private
All users, no login required.
Logged-in JSM customers.
Users in your organisation who logged in with their Atlassian account.
In addition to site access, you can set View Permissions on portions of your page layouts. This allows you to present different content to different kinds of visitors on your site, ensuring every user sees only what’s relevant to them. For example, give new hires access to an onboarding module on your intranet home. Or limit a section containing privileged or sensitive documentation to executives.
Compatibility with other apps varies based on your hosting environment (Cloud or Data Center). On cloud, Refined is compatible with a wide array of popular apps and we regularly add new apps based on customer needs, API availability and other factors.
